Question : What is a deep plane face lift?

Answer : This is a face lift in which the surgeon goes to the nasolabial groove in a space under the strong membrane of the face called the SMAS (subcutaneous aponeurotic system).

Question : How much excess skin is removed with a facelift?

Answer : Just enough.  As the deeper tissue of the face and neck (the SMAS) is elevated, the skin is draped loosely into place and trimmed just enough.   It is actually less than you might think.  More is removed with a full lower facelift than in a mini-facelift.  It is important not to pull the skin too tightly; this might lead to more visible scars.

Question :
How do you avoid an overly taut or pulled look from a facelift?

Answer:
Knowing the correct vector for the elevation is a start.  It is primarily vertical, not toward the ears.  Windswept is not the goal.  The second issue is experience. To help you find the procedure that is right for you contact us to schedule a consultation.

Question:
What should I look for when looking at before and after pictures of a potential surgeon to perform my facelift?

Answer:
Correction of jowls with a straight jawline, tightening of the neck, especially under the chin, and scars that are not visible.  The pull is vertical.  The patient should not look windswept.  The look should be natural and may be subtle in a younger patient.  Here is a link to our photo galleries on facelift and minilift:

Question:
When I wake up after my facelift surgery, what should I expect? How will I feel and look?

Answer:
You will feel tight and a bit sore.  You will be wrapped and swollen.  The pain should not be horrendous.

Question:
How young is generally too young for a facelift?

Answer:
Are you asking before all the TV make-over nonsense or after?  The most common optimal age range is 45-55.  If you are too young to have jowls, you are too young to have a facelift.  While the rare 39 year old may need a mini-lift, she would be rare.

Question:
I am interested in a neck lift. I am assuming that some skin would be removed so there must be scars. Do the scars for this procedure, or any type of facial surgery, often need to be refined later?

Answer:
Usually the scars are fine.  They are most visible behind the ears, but even then our patients do not hesitate to wear their hair up.  Here is a photo of the healed wound 1 year after a full lower facelift. The scars for a neck lift are even shorter.  See if you can find the scar:

Question:
I'm 38 years old and have some hollowing or volume loss in my lower cheeks. Can this be fixed with a facelift or would fillers or fat grafting be a better option?

Answer:
A facelift usually will not improve volume loss in the lower cheeks. A midface lift my change the appearance by moving volume up. Most commonly a filler like Radiesse, fat grafting or a cheek implant will help.

Question:
I am a 53-year-old woman and had a lower facelift last year. I am now considering a brow lift because I want to improve my upper facial area to match. Will this procedure have any complications with the previous surgery?

Answer:
There should be no problem other than perhaps the location of the incisions. You need to check with your surgeon to see where he or she places the temple incision.

Question:
What exactly is the difference between a necklift and a facelift? How do you know if you’re a candidate for one over the other?

Answer:
A full lower facelift combines a cheek lift to lift the cheeks and improve your jaw line with a necklift to tighten the neck. There is a formula on my facelift page that explains it all

FULL LOWER FACELIFT = NECKLIFT + CHEEKLIFT

I think you will find this page on my website explains it all:

I am planning on having ear surgery soon. How likely is it that others will notice that I have had this procedure?

Question : I notice that when I am not smiling, it looks like I am frowning. People actually comment that I seem angry.  I don’t know if this involves just my mouth or both my mouth and eyes. Would a consultation help me identify whether I need a cheek lift, an eyelift or both?
