Question: How often is a neck lift performed along with a chin implant? What would be the benefit?

Answer: In my hands, I would estimate about 30% of the time.  In Worcester, MA we have a lot of people of Celtic and English origin who have very short chins.  With this kind of neck, as you age the area under the chin (the submental triangle) sags significantly and becomes thicker.  Because the bone at the top of the larynx, the hyoid, sits low, the larynx (the voice box) sits too far forward.  This shortens the profile of your jawline.  A small silicone plastic chin implant placed through a small incision we will need under the chin anyway, will help give more definition and a stonger jaw line. Here are two examples, a young lady who had a submentalplatysmaplasty with some liposuction under the chin (a limited necklift) and a young lady who had full lower facelift (neck plus cheek lift):

Question: Where are the incisions made for cheek implants? Are there any noticeable signs of the surgery immediately after it is performed (swelling, scars, etc.)?

Answer: The implants are inserted through incisions inside the mouth, above the teeth. They should be visible only to your dentist. You will have swelling for 10 days -2 weeks and perhaps someblack and blue (rare).

Question :
How is chin augmentation performed?

Answer :
Under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation with local anesthesia either through a small incision under the chin or a small incision in the mouth.  It takes about 20 minutes. Here is a link that will give much more information about the process:

Question :
I’m looking for a way to add more definition to my cheeks. Are implants a good choice for this or are there any other options?

Answer :
Yes, cheek implants may be a very good choice.  Today there are many different sizes and shapes designed to augment or give definition to different parts of the cheek.

Question:
I'm interested in getting a chin implant because I have a weak chin. Will this improve my jowls at all?

Answer:
Some implants will augment thinning bone in front of the jowls.  This may de-emphasize them.  The real treatment for the jowls is a cheek lift (minilift) or full face lift.

Question:
I am a 34 year old female considering chin augmentation.  I would like to have chin and jaw angle implants put in.  What is recovery like when a patient has both of these implants put in?

Answer:
Should be about 10 days to 14 days until you can go back to work if you do the jaw angles too.  I would do just the chin first and see how it looks.  Much less surgery and less risky.

Question:
I have very nondescript cheekbones. I would like them enhanced and I think that cheek augmentation with an implant is the best way to go. What types of implants do you use? What are the risks associated with this type of surgery?

Answer:
I use many different shapes and sizes of implants. There are different zones on the cheeks, and the different shapes of the implants emphasize different zones.  The major risk is infection of the implant, and that is pretty rare.

Question:
My sister was telling me how happy she was with her chin implant and recommended that I get one too. How exactly will a chin implant benefit the look of my face?

Answer:
If you have a short or weak chin, it will add volume to your chin and lengthen your jaw line.

Question:
I would like lip augmentation with an implant. I would expect that my lips would be somewhat swollen after the procedure but are they so swollen that I would not be able to go to work the next day? Is there any chance that the swelling will persist longer than expected?

Answer:
I prefer hyaluronic acid (Perlane, Juvederm, Restylane) to permanent implants. I have done many permanent implants over the years and find the fillers to be more customizable and forgiving. That said, you lips will probably be larger than you want for about a week, but often nobody notices.

Question : I notice that when I am not smiling, it looks like I am frowning. People actually comment that I seem angry.  I don’t know if this involves just my mouth or both my mouth and eyes. Would a consultation help me identify whether I need a cheek lift, an eyelift or both?
