Facial augmentation refers to procedures in which areas of the face are augmented with either an implant or filler to enhance the overall appearance. The most common areas on the face that are augmented are the cheeks, chin, lips, and grooves within the face. Deciding on which approach you would like to take for your cheek augmentation or other augmentation procedure can be achieved with the help of Dr. Bentkover during consultation.
How Do You Decide?
While doing your research on which procedure is best for you, there will always be a few things to consider. It generally boils down to the type of procedure you would want and if you want a more permanent solution. Facial implants tend to provide a more permanent solution, though the procedure to insert them is generally consider more invasive. Some people stray away from the more invasive cosmetic surgery procedures due to the amount of downtime required, the inherent risks involved and surgery, and sometimes even the extra cost. When patients are considering cosmetic surgery, they typically want a procedure that looks natural and will last a long time.
Other people who want to enhance their appearance may be a little apprehensive of surgery. For these patients, injectable fillers can be an excellent alternative offering a natural appearance with faster results. The cost is low and there is essentially no down time to these procedures. Fillers are not permanent, so patients will have to attend additional appointments once the filler wears off, generally 6 months to a year depending on the type of filler. Fillers can be an excellent way for patients to preview the potential results of surgery before making a commitment.
The consultation appointment with Dr. Bentkover is an excellent time for the patient to review the different options that are available to them. Prior to the consultation appointment, most patients tend to do their own research at home so they have a general idea of what may happen and what to expect. By doing research prior, you can adequately make a list of any questions or concerns you may have regarding the procedures.
During the appointment, Dr. Bentkover will examine your face and more specifically the areas you want augmented. He will then discuss your medical history to determine what procedures you may be a good candidate for. After the examination, Dr. Bentkover can make a professional recommendation on what path may be best for you: implants or fillers. He will explain in full detail what each path requires and what he expects of you before and after each treatment. Based on Dr. Bentkover’s recommendation, whether it is implants or fillers, he will be sure to thoroughly explain each procedure to you. If you do choose to go with the fillers, Dr. Bentkover can recommend what type of filler may be best for you and what you desire from the procedure itself.
Dr. Bentkover and his staff will prepare the patient on what to do prior to the procedure and what is expected during the recovery period. The downtime for the procedure can vary because every patient heals differently. For surgery, Dr. Bentkover may suggest that you take a few days off until your next follow-up appointment so he can assess where you stand. With fillers, you will likely be able to return to your normal activities right away.
Filler procedures are performed differently than implant procedures. They are usually performed in the office with a topical anesthetic and takejust 30-60 minutes to complete. Work and other normal activities can typically be resumed right after the treatment. Surgery is generally more involved and may be performed in a surgical suite or hospital setting. Local anesthesia is often used. Implants are inserted through small incisions. Patients will need to take it easy for a period of time after surgery.
