Question : During a neck lift, what do you do to improve neck banding?

Answer : The bands are caused by sagging (ptotic) bands of the platysma muscle. This muscle is just under the skin. It is tightened under the chin and at its out edges if needed.

Question: How often is a neck lift performed along with a chin implant? What would be the benefit?

Answer: In my hands, I would estimate about 30% of the time.  In Worcester, MA we have a lot of people of Celtic and English origin who have very short chins.  With this kind of neck, as you age the area under the chin (the submental triangle) sags significantly and becomes thicker.  Because the bone at the top of the larynx, the hyoid, sits low, the larynx (the voice box) sits too far forward.  This shortens the profile of your jawline.  A small silicone plastic chin implant placed through a small incision we will need under the chin anyway, will help give more definition and a stonger jaw line. Here are two examples, a young lady who had a submentalplatysmaplasty with some liposuction under the chin (a limited necklift) and a young lady who had full lower facelift (neck plus cheek lift):

Question : I am male, 54 years old and have neck creases. The skin seems to come towards my Adam’s apple and fold in. Would a neck lift solve this problem? What takes place during this surgery?

Answer : If the problem is due to laxity of the skin, a neck lift may certainly help.  During a neck lift procedure the muscles of the neck and the overlying skin are tightened.  Sometimes some liposuction at the same time is beneficial.

Question :
I never thought I would start to wear turtlenecks to hide my neck but I do!  How dramatically improved can I expect my neck to be after a necklift? Can I throw my turtlenecks away?

Answer :
Generally, yes.  But some of the answer to that depends on your age.  At age 50 it is much easier to get a really tight neck than at 70, but it is still worth having surgery at 70.

Question :
I have a sagging neck and am desperate to get rid of it. I’d like a necklift but don’t want a large scar. Are the incisions relatively small?

Answer :
It is not an issue of the size of the scar, it is about careful closure of the incision and the length of the incision.  There are usually three incisions.  The first is about 1 inch long and hidden in a crease under your chin.  The other two begin in the crease between your earlobe and cheek and go around the back of the ear lobe and into the hairline.  Our patients are usually able to wear their hair up without any concern.  Here are some photos to examine

Question:
I have a double chin and my neck is very flabby. Will a necklift fix both of these?

Answer:
It certainly should improve those conditions.

Question : I notice that when I am not smiling, it looks like I am frowning. People actually comment that I seem angry.  I don’t know if this involves just my mouth or both my mouth and eyes. Would a consultation help me identify whether I need a cheek lift, an eyelift or both?
