Question:
I’m interested in getting some laser resurfacing to my face. What sort of results can I expect?

Answer:
It all depends on the extent of your wrinkles or scars.  Acne scars can usually be improved about 30% or more.  Wrinkles can be improved more.

Question:
Can a blepharoplasty effectively remove my dark under eye circles?

Answer:
To the extent that dark circles under the eyes are actually shadow off of protruding fat pads, yes.  If they are from hyper pigmentation (brown pigment), the skin will need to be treated separately. Here is an example:

Question:
What is Fractional Skin Resurfacing? What does it do and how effective is it?

Answer:
All of the lasers used for skin resurfacing now are "fractional". This means that the beam the hits the skin in made up of a regular pattern of tiny, parallel beams with a regular spacing between them that leaves untreated areas also. The theory is that the skin will heal quicker if more normal tissue is left behind. It works well for some fine lines, but patients with deeper lines often need more than one pass with the laser, which essentially winds up treating the entire surface.

Question:
I am a 42-year-old mom of three. I don’t feel old, yet I feel like I constantly look exhausted. Does blepharoplasty help reduce darkness under the eyes?

Answer:
Darkness under your eyes is often a multi factorial issue. It may be caused by hyperpigmentation of the skin, shadow off the fat pads of you lower lids if they protrude some, and loss of soft tissue volume below the eyes that contributes to a deep tear trough. A lower lid blepharoplasty in which some of the fat of the lower lids is moved to fill in the tear trough may help some. Laser resurfacing to tighten the lower lid skin may help some. Treating your skin with hydroquinone to lighten the skin or the Obagi Nu Derm system may also help. Check out theses photos on our website

Question:
What are my different options for laser skin resurfacing procedures?

Answer:
Carbon dioxide laser is the most common.  Now it is what is called fractionated. That means the way it is put down on the skin preserves more tissue.   I also use Portrait plasma for people with less deep wrinkles and extensive hyper pigmentation.

Question:
I have acne scars that I would like resurfaced. There are a couple deeper creases but most of the scarring is diffuse and spread over my cheeks. How many laser treatments are needed to remove these scars? Is there any down time associated with this procedure?

Answer:
The number of treatments depends, as you already seem to know, on the degree of the scarring. You may see enough improvement with the first procedure and not want another.

Question:
I am interested in laser skin resurfacing to remove brown age spots and fine wrinkles. Is this a treatment that is finished in one session? What will my face look like the next day? Will I be able to go to work?

Answer:
If you have a light carbon dioxide peel with the Active FX laser or a plasma peel with the Portrait plasma deep enough to be effective, you will be out of work for 1 week.

Question:
I am a woman with a darker complexion. I have bad acne scars and am interested in laser skin resurfacing. Will I have any problems with hyperpigmentation?

Answer:
You could. You skin would need to be prepared with a bleaching agent like hydroquinone. You should consider the Fraxel laser.

Question:
I have very bad facial acne scars. I hate looking like this and it seems to look even worse every year. I am Mexican and have darker skin. Is there a skin resurfacing procedure that I can have that won’t change my skin color but will get rid of some of the pitting on my face?

Answer:
This is a very difficult problem. With darker skin there is a real risk of increased pigment, hyperpigmentation. I would not want to use a carbon dioxide laser on your skin. A series of treatments with a Fraxel laser might help.

Question:
I am a 52-year-old man interested in laser skin resurfacing. How long must I wait after the procedure to start shaving again?

Answer:
Very, very carefully with an electric razor (with proper razor skin prep) at about 10 days. The new skin is very easily injured.

Question : I notice that when I am not smiling, it looks like I am frowning. People actually comment that I seem angry.  I don’t know if this involves just my mouth or both my mouth and eyes. Would a consultation help me identify whether I need a cheek lift, an eyelift or both?
