Hyperpigmentation is a harmless skin condition in which patches of skin become darker than the surrounding skin. Some people may never experience hyperpigmentation, while others may find that it runs in their family or that they begin to experience the condition with age.
Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces too much melanin. It is more common in individuals who are frequently exposed to naturally hot and sunny areas as the melanin helps to protect the skin from ultraviolet rays omitted by the sun. It may also occur due to hormonal changes, acne, bad skin treatments, and heredity. The condition is also common in individuals with darker skin tones.
Though harmless, hyperpigmentation can be a source of embarrassment or self-consciousness for many individuals. Fortunately, there are solutions for this condition. Dr. Stuart Bentkover can help you reach your goal of clear, even skin with a few different treatment options available to you. His 30 plus years of experience within the field of cosmetic surgery can help lead you down the right path.
What Are My Options?
There are a variety of options available for treating hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation most often occurs on areas of the body that are exposed to the sun, particularly the face and neck area. However, it may also occur on the chest, arms, legs and elsewhere, and all areas can be treated successfully. While there are a variety of treatment options available, from creams and serums, to chemical peels and more, laser treatments are one of the most successful and commonly used treatments for hyperpigmentaton.
PicoSure® Laser Skin Rejuvenation
The PicoSure® Laser is another option for the treatment of hyperpigmentation, but has multiple other uses as well. Not only can it successfully treat hyperpigmentation on the face, it can also be used to remove unwanted tattoos and rejuvenation for the face, hands, legs, décolleté or chest, and back, acne scars, pigmented lesions and some fine lines. The PicoSure® laser‘s cutting-edge technology results in a very effective, non-invasive fractional laser, unparalleled in that it’s almost painless, perfect for those looking to improve the skin’s texture and tone. There is little or no down time. The number of treatments needed will depend on the patient’s skin tone and how stubborn the area is that is being treated.
Portrait PSR3 Plasma Skin Rejuvenation
Dr. Bentkover often uses Portrait PSR3 Plasma Skin Rejuvenation to treat unwanted pigmentation of the skin. Less invasive than traditional carbon dioxide laser resurfacing, this treatment uses a nitrogen plasma spray rather than a laser. When applied to the skin, it heats the deeper layer of the skin, stimulating the production of collagen. This treatment is performed in the office setting and offers less healing time and less overall downtime. Typically, one or two treatments are needed, though the number of treatments will depend on the individual. More treatments may be needed for those with darker skin tones.
