What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, also known as a “nose job”, refers to the art and science used to surgically reconstruct the nose. Rhinoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed and it is performed every week by Dr. Stuart Bentkover. The procedure can help to reshape the nose by adding to, reshaping or removing bone and cartilage to create a more appealing appearance.
What Happens During Rhinoplasty?
For rhinoplasty surgery, intravenous or general anesthesia is first administered to the patient. One of two techniques may be used, the open or closed approach, and this will depend on the changes being made. A closed or endonasal approach requires no external incisions as the incisions are confined to the inside of the nose. An open approach requires a small incision be made on the strip of skin on the underside of the nose between the nostrils. While this will result in a tiny though well-concealed scar it is often preferred in cases where full interior access is needed. Typically, when a surgeon uses an open approach it means more work needs to be completed compared to a closed approach where just interior work is being performed. Dr. Bentkover prefers to use an open approach so he can observe everything and know exactly what he is working with.
Once the incisions are made, Dr. Bentkover carefully reshapes the cartilage and bone. He will always use the patient’s own cartilage from their nasal septum in order to strengthen and develop the new shape. By utilizing the patient’s own cartilage, there will be less of a chance that the body will reject the cartilage.
How is Rhinoplasty Different between Women and Men?
Rhinoplasty procedures can be performed on both men and women. Over the past few years, the number of men receiving male plastic surgery has significantly increased. The procedure is the same for both genders, but the goals of plastic surgery for men may be different. Men often seek more subtle changes and typically want to ensure that they retain a masculine look. A man with a dorsal hump, for instance may want to leave behind a bit of the hump to avoid an overly operated on or feminine appearance. A small male nose may be enlarged in order to create a more masculine appearance or balance out a stronger chin.
During the recovery process, both genders have to follow the same common practices, which include no sun, no alcohol, no smoking, and no strenuous activities. Men will have to refrain from shaving their face for three weeks after the surgery. Social activities may resume when the patient is ready and comfortable.
What are the Perks of Rhinoplasty?
The cosmetic perks of rhinoplasty included improved facial balance and an overall improved facial appearance. Commonly, a patient may want a bump to be removed from the bridge of their nose, to reduce the size or width of the nose, or to adjust the shape and the tip of the nose. Rhinoplasty can also be used to help an individual who has a deformity or damage as a result of a major trauma or illness. There are functional perks of rhinoplasty as well. Changing the shape of the nose may improve an individual’s breathing and conditions like sleep apnea or snoring. Rhinoplasty can help fix those cosmetic and functional issues to help patients gain a new outlook on life. Having full self-confidence with your appearance is very important, mentally and psychologically. When a patient has a negative feeling about their appearance, that can hinder their everyday abilities.
