Procedure: Male Cosmetic and Reconstructive Procedures
Surgeon:
Location: Worcester, Massachusetts
Procedure details: 55 year old male. The reconstructive challenge was to give this gentleman a normal looking scalp after Mohs surgery for a large basal cell skin cancer. A skin graft would not have looked nartural in this balding professional, and his scalp skin was much too tight to do a flap reconstruction without first expanding the tussue. A tissue expander was placed and inflated slowly over 12 weeks. This made more skin for reconstruction. The day after the skin cancer was removed, Dr. Bentkover removed the expander and brought a flap of the now expanded scalp over the defect.

Photos in order beginning with left upper and moving clockwise show:

  1. Pre-op
  2. Immediately after the Mohs surgery
  3. Removal of the tissue expander at time of reconstruction
  4. Final outcome after the reconstruction.
