Dr. Bentkover has over 30 years experience with facial fillers. The right facial filler for you depends on the location to be filled, the depth of the area to be filled, and how long you want it to last.
As you age, creases commonly develop in your face. Facial fillers can help alleviate these problems. Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvéderm®, Restylane®, Perlane® and Belotero® can be used to fill fine lines on the face and for lip sculpting and augmentation. They are injected into the dermis (the deep layer) of the skin. Hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar (polysaccharide), is found normally in the skin. As you age, you loose hyaluroinic acid. This can contribute to wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid holds fluid in the skin. As you lose hyaluronic acid, your skin thins out. By adding hyaluronic acid as a filler to the dermis, it can decrease wrinkles by providing some volume and drawing fluid into the wrinkles.

What is Juvéderm?®
Juvéderm® is a dermal filler used to diminish the appearance of wrinkles. It is produced by Allergan®, the maker of Botox®. Like Belotero®, Perlane® and Restylane®, it is a non animal, artificially produced hyaluronic acid filler. It is a very homogenous gel that flows very easily through a syringe.
Juvéderm® comes in two forms, Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus. Ultra Plus is more concentrated and designed for deeper injection than Juvéderm® Ultra. It tends to last longer and pulls more fluid into the injected area. This extra fluid retention can be beneficial when augmenting lips. Many of our patients in their 20’s and 30’s prefer Ultra Plus for lip augmentation. Older patients seem to prefer Ultra or one of the other hyaluroinic fillers. Both forms of Juvéderm® come with and without lidocaine.
Who is a candidate for Juvéderm®?
Unless you are allergic to certain types of bacteria, have a bleeding disorder or are under 21 years old, you are probably a candidate for Juvéderm®. Like all hyaluronic acid fillers, Juvéderm® works well on any skin tone or color. Dr. Bentkover and you will together decide if this product is right for you.
Here is a partial list of the uses for Juvéderm®:
- The fine lines of the upper and lower lips-lipstick spill lines and depressions in the lips
- Lip augmentation and shaping
- Some scar depressions and lines
- Tear Troughs
- Corners of the mouth
- Nasolabial folds and marionette lines are the most common areas injected.
What is the treatment procedure?
The treatment procedure for Juvéderm® is pretty straightforward. At your consultation you and Dr. Bentkover will discuss what you want to achieve with the injection and what is reasonably possible and advantageous for you. If you choose to be treated then, we will use a topical and/or local injected anesthetic to numb the areas to be injected. The actual injection takes just a few minutes, but plan on being in the office 30-60 minutes for the preparation and the application of ice afterwards. This is an uncomfortable procedure without the anesthetics.
What are the benefits of Juvéderm®?
The benefits of Juvéderm® are simple; it can improve the appearance of fine lines, augment facial creases and depressions, and help sculpt your lips. It typically lasts six to nine months, meaning you will need more injections sometime in that time frame. We usually check the initial results at 3-4 weeks to make sure you have enough product and like the result. As with other hyaluronic acid fillers, a top off before the product is gone typically helps prolong the longevity.
What is the recovery time?
Not everyone experiences side effects, which include redness, swelling, bruising and itching. Some bruising and swelling is not unusual and varies depending on the location of the injections. Tear trough injections especially can give 7-14 days of usually mild bruising. Ice application for 20 minutes every 2 hours for the first 24-48 hours is helpful. The real effect of the filler is seen at 3-4 weeks, after all the initial swelling is gone. That is why we like to check the injection at that time.
Charges vary. Our prices are very competitive, but we are not the lowest cost provider. It is not just about cost and the filler; it is as much about the experience and aesthetic expertise of the physician doing the injection. (You will usually pay less for a less experienced injector without proper residency or fellowship training in one to the real aesthetic specialties.) We are happy to discuss our pricing over the phone (508-363-6500).
Juvéderm® is a hyaluronic acid filler like Belotero®, Perlane® and Restylane®. It augments the dermis and draws fluid into the dermis. Its concentration is comparable to Perlane® so it may last longer than Restylane®. Juvéderm® and Belotero® are smoother gels and may disperse more evenly. Radiesse® is placed under the skin and is used to increase facial volume.
Depending on the location and the volume of the injection, most swelling is gone within a few days. Some areas, like the lips and tear troughs can be swollen for 10-14 days.
While time between injections varies from patient to patient, it is a good idea to wait approximately a month after initial injections before getting more. It often takes this long to see the real result of the initial treatment.
*Please do not plan on having your injection of Juvederm less than 8 weeks before a special event or vacation. While complications are rare, they can occur.
