More commonly known as a double chin, excess under chin fat (submental fat) is a frequent problem. Both men and women can see this unwanted fatty tissue develop, often as a result of genetics or the normal aging process. For many years, liposuction or a face lift have been the only treatment options available. Dr. Bentkover now offers the Boston area an innovative non-surgical option to eliminate the unattractive double chin: Kybella®. It can treat that pesky small or large bulge under your chin that does not go away when you lose weight.
*Each patient is unique and individual results may vary.
What is Kybella®?
Kybella® is the first injectable approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to eliminate submental fat. The injectable is made from deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that is used by the body to naturally rid fatty cells. Kybella® targets fat cells, breaking down their walls, allowing the body to safely metabolize the tissue. The result can be a smooth, sculpted jawline without the risk or recovery time associated with a surgical procedure.
Bentkover Facial Plastic Surgery and Laser Center will tailor each Kybella® procedure to fit the individual patient’s unique needs. The severity of submental fat will determine the number of treatment sessions needed for desired results and whether you are a candidate for the procedure. Compared to more traditional treatments for the double chin, Kybella® can provide the same or similar results for patients with moderate to severe submental fullness without surgery.
Who is a candidate for Kybella®?
Kybella® is approved by the FDA for patients over the age of 18. If you are frustrated with the appearance of a double chin and are in good health, you may be a good candidate for the procedure. Potential patients should understand the treatment process, and as with any cosmetic procedure, hold reasonable expectations for the final results.
Kybella® is safe for all skin types and ethnicities. Dr. Bentkover may recommend postponing the Kybella® procedure for some people, such as those who are pregnant, have a bleeding disorder, or an active infection. Additionally, anyone with existing scarring below the chin or neck “bands” (platysma muscle bands) may not be a good candidate for Kybella®.
The Kybella® Consultation with Dr. Bentkover:
To determine if Kybella® is right for you, a consultation with Dr. Bentkover will be scheduled prior to the procedure. At this time, Dr. Bentkover will examine facial tissues and look over your medical history. He will explain the Kybella® treatment process, including both the benefits and potential risks, Dr. Bentkover will also show before/after photographs of his recently treated patients. If it is determined that Kybella® is right for your needs, a personalized treatment plan will be laid out, including the exact price of the procedure.
Your Kybella® Treatment:
Dr. Bentkover will determine the extent of correction needed during your Kybella® consultation. Then, during your appointment, a number of small injections will be administered along the target area. While the injections are not considered painful, Dr. Bentkover’s staff can apply a topical or local anesthetic to improve overall comfort. You will experience a burning sensation during the procedure that goes away in about 15-20 minutes. The entire Kybella® session should take less than 30 minutes.
Between two and six Kybella® treatments will be necessary for optimal results. The exact number will depend on the amount of submental fat present. Each session should be spaced between four to six weeks apart. Dr. Bentkover may also suggest additional procedures that can help to achieve total facial rejuvenation, including Botox® Cosmetic or dermal fillers.
Your Kybella® Recovery:
There is no downtime needed, following a Kybella® treatment. Patients can immediately go back to their normal activities, including exercise. Most people return to work the same afternoon. Initially, some mild redness may be noticeable along the treated area, but this will usually clear up over the next 24 to 48 hours. Makeup can be worn the next day, easily concealing any discoloration. Minor swelling and bruising is normal, although these will resolve over the following week. Ice will be your friend.
The results from a Kybella® treatment are not immediate. Once the fat cells are destroyed, your body will slowly metabolize the debris. As this occurs, over the following four to six weeks, the chin will become more sculpted. Some benefits of treatment can be seen after one to two treatments, and these will continue to improve with subsequent sessions. The results from Kybella® are long lasting, as the fat cells do not return. Once the series of treatments is complete, no further procedures will be necessary to maintain the results.
What are the risks of Kybella®?
Kybella® was approved by the FDA in 2015 as a safe treatment for submental fat, and poses few risks. Redness, minor swelling, and bruising are not uncommon, although these normally diminish within the first few days. More serious complications from Kybella® are rare but can include excessive bleeding, temporary numbness, temporary decreased movement at the corner of your mouth and temporary difficulty swallowing. Dr. Bentkover is a Board Certified Facial Plastic surgeon, experienced in Kybella® technique and facial surgery. This minimizes risks following the treatment.

Kybella® is an FDA-approved injectable, designed to eliminate submental fatty tissue. It is deoxycholic acid.
Kybella® is derived from deoxycholic acid, a molecule that occurs naturally in the human body and helps to rid unwanted fat. When Kybella® is injected into a targeted area, fat cells are destroyed and then safely eliminated by the body.
The ideal candidate for Kybella® is someone in good health but is frustrated with the appearance of his/her double chin. Prospective patients should also have realistic expectations for the final results.
Kybella® treatment involves a series of up to 50 small injections with a very tiny needle injected directly into the submental fat below the chin. The desired level of correction will determine how many Kybella® injections are needed during each appointment and the number of appointments needed.
Although this is not necessarily painful, Dr. Bentkover will use a topical or local anesthetic for additional patient comfort during the procedure. Mild pressure and a burning-like discomfort may be noticeable during the Kybella® injections. This passes in few minutes.
Dr. Bentkover’s Kybella® treatment sessions take less than half an hour to perform.
One to six Kybella® treatments may be necessary to achieve your desired results. Dr. Bentkover will estimate the number of sessions needed during the Kybella® consultation appointment. Your preferences will help make this decision. Often the number of injection sessions is more accurately determined after the first treatment.
Yes. Kybella® will permanently destroy fat cells within the target area. You have a fixed number of fat cells. Once some are gone, they do not come back.
Kybella® has been approved by the FDA as a safe and effective treatment for submental fat. While minor bruising, swelling, and redness can be expected initially, these normally only last a few days. More serious risks from Kybella® are rare, but may include temporary nerve damage, difficulty swallowing, or excessive bleeding.
No. Kybella® has been approved by the FDA to treat only submental fullness. Since the injectable works best on smaller areas of isolated fat, Kybella® is an excellent choice for eliminating a double chin.
