Why a whole separate section of the website devoted to Male Cosmetic Surgery?
Is it because?
- Nationwide and in our own practice, over the last few years, the number of men having cosmetic surgery and office procedures has increased dramatically.
- Men view themselves differently than women.
- We are just picking on the guys.
If you answered 1 or 2, you are right.
Our society places a high value on looking young and fit. Today, men of all ages and all walks of life are requesting cosmetic surgery for reasons which include a more balanced nose, a rejuvenated face, and job competitiveness. Especially with men, the surgeon must take skin thickness, beard growth and body type into account when recommending and performing a particular procedure.
However, men often like to have things "over with" quickly and may not be as patient as women in the post-operative period. If you are considering a cosmetic procedure, you must realize that it may take a few weeks to many months for swelling or redness to subside or for you to see the final results of your surgery.
Planning your surgery
Good communication between you and your surgeon is essential. In your initial consultation, you will be asked why you want a particular procedure and how you hope to look and feel afterward. It is important to set aside any awkwardness you might feel and speak candidly about the changes you would like to see. Your consultation will cover information on your operation extensively. Dr. Bentkover will discuss with you a number of factors that may influence your surgery. Make sure you fully understand these considerations. Above all, it is important to have realistic expectations about your surgery and not be hesitant to ask questions.
Dr. Bentkover will also evaluate your health, examine your face, take pre-operative photographs, and explain the surgical techniques he thinks are most appropriate for you. He will also discuss the type of anesthesia to be used, the type of facility where the surgery will be performed, and the possible risks and benefits. He will not discuss costs with you; a staff person will answer those questions.
As Dr. Bentkover evaluates your face and neck, some of the issues he will consider are as follows:
- Are your brows heavy?
- Do your eyelids make you look tired? Is your hairline receding?
- How full are your sideburns?
- Does your beard-growing skin extend up the cheeks or down the neck?
- Are there facial scars?
- Do you have many prominent unsightly blood vessels on your face?
- Is your skin sun-damaged? Is your neck skin loose or drooping? Do you have Rosacea?
Perhaps all you need is some treatment of the "broken capillaries" of your face and neck with our V-Beam dye laser, some Botox®, an injectible facial filler, or a small cosmetic implant. But, you might also be considering a rhinoplasty, eyelid or brow surgery, laser treatment for wrinkles and scars, a neck lift or a facelift.
Perhaps a fatty or "jowly" area is your concern. In younger patients, liposuction alone may be sufficient to correct the problem. Older patients may require a full facelift and necklift, which may include the removal of excess skin and tightening the platysma muscles, the muscles which run down each side of the neck. These muscles are usually thicker in men than they are in women.
Cosmetic procedures such as eyelid surgery, nose surgery, and facial-implant surgery are performed essentially the same way for men and women; but the goals may be very different. It is important to let Dr. Bentkover know if you are seeking a more masculine look to your facial features-such as a chin with better projection, more prominent cheekbones or a stronger nose.
