Dr. Bentkover is one of the first plastic surgeons in Central Massachusetts and Northern Rhode Island to offer Xeomin®, the newest botulinum toxin. It is not scheduled to be released to the general market until Spring of 2012. Through a special arrangement, we will have it November 1, 2011, and will offer special introductory pricing!
What is Xeomin®?
Now you have more choice. Xeomin® (Onabotulinum toxinA) is the newest botulinum toxin on the US Market. Like Botox® and Dysport® it has been widely and successfully used in Europe for a number of years. Also, its indications are the same as the other botulinum toxins.
Xeomin® is a medication that was approved for use for cosmetic treatment in July, 2011. Regular use will begin in the spring of 2012. In addition to its cosmetic uses, Xeomin® is also used to treat people with cervical dystonia (pain and contortion of the neck) and blepharospasm ( a condition where the eyelids spasm uncontrollably).
Not all botulinum toxin products are exactly the same
Not all botulinum toxin products are the same. This is reflected in the unique names for each product. The dose of Xeomin® may be different from other botulinum toxin products. All botulinum toxins are derived from the bacteria Clostridia Botulinum. Xeomin® is distinct from other forms of botulinum toxin in that it is a "naked toxin". It does not come with other proteins which might cause allergic reactions or immunity to the product. We see patients who have become immune to Botox®, so this is a real issue. Your body can mount an immune response to any injected protein. Removing the protein from the molecule makes immunity to Xeomin® much less likely. Do you need the protein on the molecule for the product to work? No, the protein on the botulinum toxin molecule in its natural state is there to protect it from acids and enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract. Clearly, it is not needed when injected into your face.
Xeomin®, like Dysport®, is a smaller molecule than Botox® Some of our patients have found that the smaller molecule disperses a bit more on their foreheads and in the area between their eyes (the glabella).
How is Xeomin® made?
After the toxin is produced by the bacteria, Merz takes the toxin complex and employs a proprietary manufacturing process that isolates the therapeutic component and removes the accessory proteins to produce Xeomin®.
Is Xeomin® Right for You?
A good candidate for Xeomin® is an adult who has deep frown lines, or glabellar lines, between their eyes, deep forehead creases or deep crow's feet wrinkles. Xeomin® works to relax the muscles that cause these lines. Everybody reacts slightly differently to each botulinum toxin injection, and each product can work slightly differently on different people. The only way to see if you will like Xeomin® better than Botox® or Dysport® is to try it. Again, now you have more choice.
Areas treated include...
- The crow's feet around your eyes
- The worry lines or scowl lines between your brows (the "11's" in the area called your glabella). If these lines are very deep, you may also want a facial filler in this area.
- The Forehead for a "Xomin® Browlift" to elevate your brow.
- The horizontal lines of your forehead.
- The chin creases caused by over-active muscles in that area.
- The muscles under your chin.
