Your Xeomin® Procedure

Your Procedure

How Xeomin Works

Just like Botox® and Dysport®, Xeomin® is injected into muscles to decrease their activity. It blocks the release of a chemical messenger acetylcholine that conveys the signal from nerve terminals and causes muscle fibers to contract. Not all terminals are affected by any botulinum toxin; and, therefore, the muscles can still contract, just less forcefully.

The Risks

Xeomin® is no more risky than the other two products. Severe complications are extremely rare. The risks of all three botulinum toxins are basically the same, except that patients with milk allergies should avoid Dysport®. The most common side effect of Xeomin® for frown lines is headache, and this was seen in only 5.4 per cent of the patients in the initial clinical studies. Just like with Botox® and Dysport®, the Food and Drug Administration requires that Xeomin® come with a black box warning, which means it can have very severe and even life endangering side effects. Life threatening reactions to any of these products are usually with doses far in excess of the cosmetic dose. If you have a neuromuscular disorder, however, you certainly need to discuss the use of any botulinum toxin with your physician before getting a treatment. A patient should not get botulinum toxin if allergic to any botulinum toxin or if there is an infection or skin lesions around the area to be injected. People also should not get botulinum toxin if they have neuromuscular conditions that cause them to have trouble breathing or swallowing. The development of side effects can be delayed over a period of hours or even weeks. Botulinum toxin should be avoided by people who are taking aminoglycoside antibiotics or medications that address neuromuscular problems.

Question : I notice that when I am not smiling, it looks like I am frowning. People actually comment that I seem angry.  I don’t know if this involves just my mouth or both my mouth and eyes. Would a consultation help me identify whether I need a cheek lift, an eyelift or both?
