What is Restylane®?
There is no doubt that waking up each morning and seeing a face you don’t really recognize in the mirror can be jarring and upsetting. While this is simply the natural aging process at work and it happens to every person at some point in life, there is no longer any need to struggle with accepting aging’s effects.
Making a choice for facial rejuvenation is a highly individual decision. You may want to address just one small issue or you might find yourself dreaming about a more comprehensive facial refreshment. Wherever you fall on this spectrum, the choice is completely up to you. When you are ready, the new suite of Restylane products will be able to meet your facial rejuvenation needs.
Restylane® is a popular cosmetic filler that is most commonly used around the mouth and nose areas. It is suggested for use by people aged 21 or over and can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments for facial enhancement. It is a gel created from natural hyaluronic acid produced safely from bacteria. Hyaluronic acid is a normal component of skin that decreases as you age. This loss of hyaluronic acid can lead to thinning of the skin and loss of hydration in the skin. Restylane Silk is designed specifically for lip augmentation, sculpting and fine lines. Restylane Lyft is most commonly used for cheek elevation and augmentation. To learn more about these, click here.

Why Have Restylane?
Restylane, Restylane Silk and Restylane Lyft are all produced by Galderma. Each product is highly complementary to the others. Since each of the three is formulated to address specific issues related to facial rejuvenation, Dr. Bentkover may use one product to address one issue and recommend a different product to address another issue.
Here is an overview of what each is most frequently used for:
– Restylane is designed to be used for enhancing fullness and shape of the lips (for patients aged 21 and up). Restylane can also be used to correct fine to mild wrinkles, lines and folds in the facial area.
– Restylane Silk is designed for precision shaping in the lip area. It can also be used to correct mild to moderate wrinkles, lines and folds in the facial area.
– Restylane Lyft is designed to add back definition and fullness and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines in the cheeks and mid-facial areas.
The first step towards having a Restylane, Restylane Silk or Restylane Lyft procedure is to schedule your initial one on one consultation with Dr. Bentkover. During the consultation, Dr. Bentkover will talk with you personally about your facial rejuvenation goals and answer all your questions.
You will be asked to complete a personal and family medical history just to rule out any possible interactions with current medications or health conditions. From here, Dr. Bentkover will do a gentle facial exam to learn your facial structure and better understand your goals. He will also take some “before” photos and may make marks or notes on those photos to denote your treatment goals.
Then Dr. Bentkover will explain the procedure, including the best way to prepare and what to expect afterwards. You will have a chance to ask all of your questions, find out about possible financing options and schedule your first appointment before you leave your consultation, if desired.
The day of your procedure, you will come to Dr. Bentkover’s office and his staff will ensure you are comfortable in the treatment room. Topical and/or local anesthetic may be administered based on your preference to ensure your comfort.
The injection(s) typically take between 30 and 60 minutes. The length of your treatment will depend on which area(s) are being treated and how many injections may be needed to accomplish your facial rejuvenation goals.
This is an office procedure that takes approximately 30 minutes, including the preparation and application of ice afterwards. The actual injection takes just a few minutes. We will numb the area to be injected with a combination of topical and injected anesthetics as needed. We will do whatever we can to make this a comfortable procedure for you. The fillers are injected using a very fine needle. The benefits are immediate. Hyaluronic acids can cause bruising, so you should not be on aspirin or NASIDs like ibuprofen for 10 days before the injection. If you are on warfarin or another significant blood thinner, you are not a reasonable candidate for a facial filler. You should also not be taking gingko, St John’s Wart, ginseng or high doses of Vitamin E. Drinking pineapple juice daily for a week before and after the injection can decrease bruising. You should not exercise for 24 hours after the injection.
Since this procedure can be done on an outpatient basis, you will be free to return home the same day and even to return to work if you feel comfortable doing so.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY LIKE?
Immediately after the injection we will apply an ice pack for a few minutes to the area injected. Over the course of a few hours, the area injected will swell. Some of that swelling helps with the on-going augmentation, but unwanted swelling usually resolves over about a 10-14 day period. The final result is usually evident by 3-4 weeks.
Patients are also advised to limit sun exposure and to report any pain or unusual symptoms immediately.
Are You A Candidate?
In general, if you are in excellent health otherwise, you are likely to be a good candidate to receive Restylane, Restylane Silk and/or Restylane Lyft treatment. However, there may be certain times when Dr. Bentkover may recommend postponing your treatment, such as if any of the following applies to you right now:
– You are planning to become pregnant, are pregnant now or are breastfeeding.
– You are a heavy smoker and are not willing to stop for a period of time before and after the procedure (smoking heavily can inhibit your body’s ability to heal itself).
– You are taking medications that may interact with the treatment or interfere with blood clotting.
– You have any known skin disorders, such as a tendency to keloid during scarring or to experience pigment changes.
– You have a serious health issue such as cancer, diabetes or an autoimmune disorder.
– You are just beginning or are still in the middle of a major weight loss regimen.
It is quite common to have questions about receiving Restylane, Restylane Silk and/or Restylane Lyft treatments, especially if this will be your very first treatment of this type. These frequently asked questions can help you learn more about what to expect.
In addition to following any specific instructions Dr. Bentkover may give you, it is a good idea to avoid taking Vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, aspirin and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications) for at least a week prior to your treatment. This is because taking any of these medications or supplements can make post-treatment bleeding and bruising worse.
The procedure itself may last just a few minutes if you are only have a small area treated. In general, treatments last no longer than 60 minutes including preparatory time.
After your treatment, you may experience some temporary side effects. The most commonly reported recovery side effects include mild swelling, bruising, redness, itching, irritation, skin sensitivity, soreness, headache or nausea.
The length of time that improvements will last differs from patient to patient, though most people enjoy the effects for approximately six to nine months. After this time, the procedure will need to be repeated for enduring results. Because of its larger particle size. The right product for you depends on where it is being placed.
As with any invasive procedure such as injection, there is always a minimal risk of infection occurring. Occasionally a patient may experience mild muscle weakness which typically resolves within weeks.
You will be able to return to work the same day if desired.
*Please do not plan on having your injection of Restylane less than 8 weeks before a special event or vacation. While complications are rare, they can occur.
